Himalayan glaciers are melting fast. Nearly a third of ice loss on the southern Tibetan Plateau is from black carbon soot - from diesel, brick kilns, cookstoves, crop fires.

While not as bad as solid fuel cookstoves, cooking on gas is still much worse for health than electric because of NOx pollutants
🔥 The hidden health crisis in our kitchens:

While many enjoy clean electric cooking, 40% of the world burns wood, dung, or coal—often in open fires.

Even gas stoves emit harmful pollutants.

Toxic pollutants leads to respiratory and heart diseases, causing millions of premature deaths.

Fossil gas is not “clean”, it’s a health hazard and a cause of global heating. Clean cookstoves are electric or solar
“Clean cooking is freedom. This is life-expanding, life-enhancing and game changing. This is what the IEA should be focused on and – I’m thrilled – is focused on.”

Subsidies for clean cookstoves can abate carbon dioxide at only $7 per ton of CO2.

We account for issues like imperfect additionality, stove breakage rates, non-usage or low usage by some buyers, and others.

There are compelling reasons to protect forests from destruction, giving out efficient cookstoves & other ways that generate carbon credits. But these often have very little to do with climate impacts. Ditching offsets doesn't mean giving up on these important projects.

A cook stove program supposedly designed to let companies offset their emissions while also improving the lives of people in Mozambique and elsewhere was absolutely full of shit—the cookstoves were shoddy and fell apart, monitoring of their use was nonexistent.

Excellent investigation [gift link]

Quibble: in BC, some people will use cottage or lakehouse, but that's a house hooked up to the electrical grid.
A cabin is off-grid and you're using an outhouse and propane or wood-fueled cookstoves and fires to cook.
I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from

It is impervious to high-speed impacts but can be cut into smaller pieces and harvested by slower-moving methods. Over time, humans discovered that it has many supernatural properties. For example, when burned, it is suitable fuel for cookstoves, engines, and even warp speed travel.

"Nearly 20 yrs of “bridge fuel” enthusiasm have brought us not to lower global emissions, but to a world of record-high and rapidly-expanding fracked gas production far in excess of a 1.5º- or even 2º-compatible pathway."
It’s time to abandon the ‘bridge fuel’ fantasy
The problem is fossil gas, which is mostly composed of methane, is a gas, which means it leaks constantly: at wells, in pipelines and from gas cookstoves in people’s homes.

quite a big study here showing that actual emissions reductions for a bunch of different offsets types are significantly lower than how they're marketed

This is exactly what you expect from a system that rewards maximum offset sales, not maximum climate action

Berkeley researchers have identified big issues in the accounting underpinning yet another type of carbon offset — projects that distribute clean cookstoves. They told me this carbon finance is desperately needed, but it must be based on sound science. heatmap.news/climate/offs...

It was very jarring 10/15 years ago to see efforts to replace solid fuel cookstoves in the poorest parts of Asia and Africa, only to return to London in time for the middle class fashion of installing wood stoves
DEFRA has just published a consultation on solid fuel burning. We're happy to see a long-term campaign ask addressed - warning labels on stoves. However, the proposals will only impact future emissions; they will do nothing to help all those affected by existing burning. #CleanAirNight #WoodBurning

Carbon markets for clean cookstoves are trying to solve the wrong problem.

The problem? 2.5+ billion relying on inefficient cookstoves to meet their basic needs —> health problems, local environmental issues and gender inequities that creates.

Solving that through CO2 markets is a kludge.
This is a useful reminder that the carbon market both still exists and still continues to be rife with for-profit sale of faked climate action: sucking up time, money, effort and regulatory focus from the broader effort to phase out fossil fuels.

Cultural factors also matter. Biomass is often seen as “free” and convenient, and families are used to traditional cookstoves and the flavors they generate. They might be unaware of how damaging this pollution is to their health and skeptical of the damage that alternatives such as LPG could do.
