outside of major urban areas pretty much went directly from wood cookstoves to electric, except for areas that used propane heavily. I grew up in the era where hydropower was dominant and "all electric" homes were a major selling point.)
Having a gas furnace in one house was a big eye-opener.

Quibble: in BC, some people will use cottage or lakehouse, but that's a house hooked up to the electrical grid.
A cabin is off-grid and you're using an outhouse and propane or wood-fueled cookstoves and fires to cook.

An important paper by my colleague Meena Khandelwal.
I think there are some very engaging and well-structured critiques of agricultural and forestry offsets but cookstoves are relatively unexplored and, as Meena argues, given an unwarranted pass. This work also shows offsets’ fatal flaws in general.

Meta may very well be offsetting much more carbon pollution via non-durable routes like afforestation and cookstoves.

The amount of durable Carbon Dioxide Removal that they have funded is miniscule and doesn't even cover Zuckerberg's private jet.

Subsidies for clean cookstoves can abate carbon dioxide at only $7 per ton of CO2.

We account for issues like imperfect additionality, stove breakage rates, non-usage or low usage by some buyers, and others.

Roughly 1/4 of humanity cooks over open fires. This leads to respiratory disease & carries significant financial/time burdens.

Solar-powered cookstoves can help families cook in safer & healthier ways.

These solutions exist. Let's make them available to all.

The numbers are staggering but what's more staggering is that progress has slowed. We know the solutions (renewables, mini-grids, clean cookstoves). What we need is the will.

Nigeria's Greenplinth Bets On Cookstoves To Generate Carbon Credits At Massive Scale
Nigerian clean energy company Greenplinth Africa Ltd is pushing ahead with plans to deploy 80 million clean cookstoves across the country, combining household energy access with carbon credit generation in what is described as one of the most ambitious clean cooking programs ever proposed on the African continent. The company unveiled details of the initiative at a stakeholder event in Lagos attended by government officials, traditional rulers, climate experts, and development partners, Nigerian daily The Independent reported. Greenplinth intends to distribute the stoves free of charge under a structured lease arrangement, with households receiving a proposed monthly cooking support stipend, healthcare coverage for families of up to eight members, and 40 kg (88 lb) of biomass briquettes each month over a 15-year period. Each stove will carry a 30-year warranty and a digital measuring, reporting and verification (dMRV) device to generate verifiable usage data via blockchain, supporting carbon credit issuance and climate finance applications. A pilot program launched in the informal settlement of Makoko, Lagos, has already produced striking results, as presented by Greenplinth at the event. Lagos State Special Adviser on Climate Change Titilayo Oshodi, speaking virtually from London during Climate Action Week, said households previously consuming an average...
