one mystery that I cannot unravel is why a supermajority of jazz musicians pronounce the (not-actually-written-by) Miles Davis tune “Solar” as “sole-ahr”. literally everyone I’ve met says it that way — if you said “sole-er” at a jam session you’d get made fun of — and googling does not explain it.
