Many cops think copwatching is somehow illegal via imagined authorities derived from a post 24 sense that all law enforcement is "shadow ops" and ICE is almost by design full of people who couldn't get into any other agency because their psych profiles checked the "too Jack Bauer" box. 1/

Great! 1966:

> Upon its inception, the party's core practice was its #opencarry patrols ("copwatching") designed to challenge the excessive force and misconduct of the Oakland Police Department.

I will note an early Panther activity was “copwatching” where a car full of (legally!) armed Panthers openly carrying would follow behind police cruisers to monitor their interactions with the black community
Honoring the legacy of the Black Panthers, who stood up to exercise our constitutional right to bear arms and protect our families and communities. 🫡 ✊🏾

Members of the Black Panther Party actively exercised their Second Amendment Rights, using open-carry laws to monitor police in a practice known as “copwatching.” In response, the California legislature introduced the Mulford Act, which repealed a law allowing public carrying of loaded firearms. /3

You are right.

In 1967, California Governor Ronald Reagan signed the Mulford Act, a gun control law specifically targeting the Black Panther Party's practice of openly carrying firearms, particularly while "copwatching".

"Guns for me, but not for thee."

Actually doing something in your community perhaps? Mutual aid through freedom schools, food/grocery distro, harm reduction, community medicine. Or if you're feeling spicy participating in some direct action, like ICE/copwatching.

now i consider it violence that stallman never cited the black panthers when huey p. newton's application of law to copwatching was a transformative use of the legal system of protections for some and think this is where we find free software lacking by not being radical and transformational enough

1969's "greatest threat to the internal security of the country," the Black Panther Party.

They actively resisted excessive policing with their open carry "copwatching" practice and uplifted their local communities via social programs like Free Breakfast for Children and community health clinics.

Your activism could've included most anything, both tactic and cause: climate-related direct action, tenant organizing, copwatching, queer liberation mutual aid, et al. Some brilliant folks already in the piece & hoping to include more. Long COVID spares no movement.

Is copwatching a form of citizen journalism, or is it just provocation masquerading as accountability? We debate and discuss your questions with (in)famous copwatcher Long Island Audit.
Are copwatchers journalists? Provocateurs? Or something else?

Do enough people know that copwatching as a political practice and strategy was popularized by the Black Panther Party? It was part of its approach to self-defense.

You want gun laws? This is the way to do it. The Mulford act (1967) Act was a California bill that prohibited public carrying of loaded firearms without a permit. Why was it passed? Because the Black Panthers began conducting armed patrols called ‘copwatching’ in oakland neighborhoods.

Aside from the mutual aid programs such as free breakfast for kids and education programs/health clinics, they also had armed police patrols or "copwatching."

It was effective.

If the poor immigrant working class in the US wanna survive ICE, then they should study and copy the Black Panthers.

Named for Republican state assembly member Don Mulford and signed by Governor Ronald Reagan in response to the Black Panthers conducting armed patrols (termed copwatching) in Oakland neighborhoods.
Yep... for once, the NRA took action to keep guns out of citizens' hands.

In 1967, Ronald Reagan’s California signed into law, The Mulford Act, which was a gun control law with the intended goal of disarming the Black Panthers, who at the time were “copwatching” in Oakland, which were armed patrols monitoring police, documenting brutality, & protecting Black residents.
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."
