Lord Cornwallis has arrived.
I've been sent video from the end of the ICE raid at the Zipps on 32nd and Shea.

It shows protesters -- on the sidewalk, impeding no one -- getting drive-by maced by an ICE agent from a truck as it rolls away down the road.

Hard to see how such tactics are justifiable.

#OTD in 1781, the French fleet defeated the British fleet in the Battle of the Chesapeake, leaving British troops under Lord Cornwallis in Virginia with no reinforcements or means of escape. A besieged Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown six weeks later.

Cornwallis' ghost: "Well, well, well..."
it's come to this ...

on its 250th anniversary, America is now begging the Royal Navy to help out.
Hegseth: "The president was clear this morning in his Truth that there are countries around the world who ought to be prepared to step up on this critical waterway as well. Last time I checked there was supposed to be a big bad Royal Navy that could be prepared to do things like that."

Fun fact: both Generals Howe and Cornwallis in the Revolutionary War thought the war was a mistake and unwinnable.

Also Cornwallis’ wife was named Jemima.

"General Cornwallis completes mostly successful visit to Yorktown."
This headline is hilarious when you learn that the rocket toppled over in a fiery explosion on landing

Woke history textbooks won't teach kids anymore about how Smokey The Bear mauled General Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown.

Mary Cornwallis, her face entirely overshadowed by the vast, fantastical expanse of ruff, pearls, sleeves. Especially sleeves! As painted by George Gower, whose day was today.

cornwallis--yes, that cornwallis--being involved a few years later in the conquest of india, and specifically de-inheriting all the mixed anglo-indian children in order to prevent the emergence of a unified colonial elite as happened in america--is just so wild

Oh just effin' give in, brain.

I think Jeff would happily rock the safety orange as a guy who fixes shit.

I think Washington's feint at Staten Island in 1781 before almost dead-sprinting down to Yorktown while Henry Clinton doesn't figure out Washington is gone in Sept 2, by which point Washington was in Philadelphia and Cornwallis was probably already well-caught short of naval rescue.
What is your favorite historical trick in war?

Honestly, credit to England for pulling off a result in such oppressive conditions. The spirit of Lord Cornwallis can finally be at peace.

Historical FYI: Nathanael Greene was asthmatic, had a limp and a perpetually infected eye, and was constantly sick.

He was also, as Cornwallis wrote, "as dangerous as [George] Washington. He is vigilant, enterprising, and full of resources–there is but little hope of gaining an advantage over him."
This has absolutely nothing to do with readiness
