10/? In hindsight, "The Cosby Show" is looked at fondly (minus Cosby's propensity for SA). But at the time, part of the reason it was successful was because white people were enthralled with the novelty of it, but they still didn't believe there were Black people who lived like the Cosbys.

In the early 90s there were quite a few studies that showed The Cosby Show, a supposedly ‘positive’ representation, reinforced anti-Black attitudes b/c it was used by white viewers to reinforced their bootstrap ideology. They essentially blamed poor Blacks for not being like the Cosbys.
We saw this in the 80s while Reaganism decimated poor Black communities through punitive policy and neglect but representations of middle class and wealthy Black folks proliferated in TV; more recently the increased media visibility of trans folks has not resulted in safety, but driven a backlash.
