Didn't expect CosmoDreamer to be as good as it was when a friend recommended Outside's work. A light fun experience at lower difficulties, but can provide some serious challenge on Nightmare. Fun patterns and a really great shot customization system makes this an instant classic IMO.

Outsider's games are so good! CosmoDreamer is older but worth a look too, and they re-released another game, Redneg, last year that is a ridiculous boss rush type deal.

did the first stage of cosmodreamer after bumbling through the tutorial and only realizing after i'd done it that you can set the language to english. too tired and sad to do much more tonight but i will immediately be going off of the lowest difficulty for tomorrow night's shmup bedtime session

Astrolancer is a really solid take on The Guardian Legend, it trades the wider map design for tighter action, more focus on on-foot sections, and overall better boss fights

CosmoDreamer is a very fun shmup in the style of a Cave one, felt nice and challenging with a lot of fun boss bullet patterns

I see Like Dreamer and Void Stranger, yet CosmoDreamer and ZeroRanger apparently didn't make the cut. Is that because you wanted the list to be as varied as possible, or you haven't gotten around playing those just yet? Also kudos for having Demons Roots and especially Rabi-Ribi that high up

i have not played cosmodreamer so no word on it. as for zeroranger, i liked it but not enough.

You might have a better time with 1ccing higher diffs on like dreamer, cosmodreamer likes relying on strange and annoying touhou style timeout patterns in the late game while like dreamer is way more cavey in its design language
