Hyperparasitoid of Cotesia glomerata, itself a parasitoid of Pieris brassicae.

Mind. Blown.

Cotesia glomerata on a Pieris brassicae caterpillar- the prime example of a caterpillar-parasitoid network!!

Nature never fails to amaze me. Here, the caterpillar is 'guarding' the cocoons of its parasite, which might also be parasitised(!). @europebutterfly.bsky.social #Lepidoptera

“There’s a hyperparasitoid (Hypopteromalus tabacum) on a parasitoid (Cotesia congregata) on a Sphinx (Ceratomi catalpae) on a tree (Catalpa sp.) by the pond in the middle of VT.” Fun find this week. My mind is all children’s songs these days but the lyrics might need some work….

1 of several Large White caterpillars that have been parasitised by the Ichneumon Wasp 'Cotesia glomeratus' (Stockingfield Bridge, F&C Canal)

did you know the caterpillars parasitized by cotesia glomerata, if they survive the emergence of the wasp larvae, will never pupate and instead will display maternal behaviors towards the wasp larvae, guarding them and using its silk to reinforce their coccoons?

Gorgeous work but also I love how much the lace rig looks like a Cotesia- infested caterpillar
Little update on my process post for my bobbin lace poster.

@vlinderstichting.bsky.social

The latest edition of A Duck in a Tree, now out as a podcast (bit.ly/3TkpZGF), opens with a recording of the mating call of a Cotesia marginiventris parasitic wasp, produced by buzzing its wings. Unexpectedly, it sounds more like something from the Warner Bros cartoon sound effects library.

A most unwell Large White caterpillar on our wall today. I believe the cocoons below are those of the parasitoid Cotesia glomerata, and the adults wasps look like they may be Lysibia nanus. Any confirmation/correction very welcome as always.

Poor sphinx moth caterpillar

But parasitoids (Cotesia spp) gotta eat too!

Not all of the rescued Brown Argus larvae made it to pupation. These tiny cocoons, found on the underside of a Geranium leaf, indicated some had been parasitized. Less than 10 days later several Cotesia astrarches, a known parasitoid of the butterfly emerged.

Two different situations, but just one concept, parasitism.
-A Parasitic wasp (Genus Conura), over an unidentified Hawk Moth caterpillar on a leaf.
Mindo, Ecuador. December 2015.
-Cocoons attached to a hawk caterpillar infected by a Hornworm Parasitic Wasp (Cotesia congregata) under a leaf.

A Large White caterpillar with Cotesia glomerata cocoons is a victim of a parasitic wasp. The wasp lays its eggs inside the caterpillar, which then hatch and develop by feeding on the caterpillar's internal tissues, eventually exiting to form a cluster of cocoons nearby.

Woot! Gavin Broad has just confirmed a wasp find from June. The wasp Cotesia glomerata had parasitized Large white butterfly larvae & formed cocoons but I spotted that they were in turn parasitized by the wasp Lysibia nanus. No Welsh records (but likely common/under-recorded). @sewbrec.org.uk

Just to 'blow your minds'- there is a smaller wasp, a hyperparasitoid, that parasitises the larvae of Cotesia glomerata - and they will die...Mwa ha ha ha!

Ecosystem Services Against Illegal Immigration: The Natural Control of the Migratory Butterfly Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) by Cotesia vestalis (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) on Organic Soybean in Ukraine
In central Ukraine, the migratory butterfly Vanessa cardui emerged as a key pest of organic soybean during its outbreaks in 2019 and 2022. Despite early defoliation, crops recovered strongly due to h...
