Society is made up of groups. As long as the smaller groups do not have the same rights & protection as others...it is not going to work. Somehow the guys in power have to be reached by counterpower or through a change in the hearts & minds or change will not come. #CesarChavez

a few days ago i gestured vaguely at a few institutions that might outline the shape of such a furry counterpower. but arguably more important to the creation of such institutions is the theory that informs them. i believe that revolutionary optimism is necessary if such a furry counterpower is to succeed—that is to say: if we are to change things, we must first believe another way of being is possible in the first place. i'm paraphrasing Amanda Priebe and her piece We Will Not Perfume Your Sewers: A Call to Artists here.2
Priebe, in my view, provides a compelling base of theory upon which to begin building such a furry counterpower. writing of creativity and artistry—and their power to create spaces set apart from capital—she says:
How many truly public gathering spaces are left to us outside of our relationship as consumers: the mall, the café, the university? In making art together, we create that space and a place for ourselves to imagine different, better futures. Indeed, I’m not arguing that any organised movement strengthens democracy. As Wendy Brown and others have shown, neoliberalism didn’t just erode collective structures in the abstract, it specifically dismantled progressive counterpower: labour, civil rights, and solidarity-based publics.
