While lifting the sitting day cap has been broadly welcomed, the proposal to reduce jury trials has drawn criticism from opposition parties and legal groups. Critics argue that the changes could undermine the right to a jury trial and question whether the government has adequately addressed deeper issues such as recruitment, retention, and court productivity. The government has pledged £2.7bn in funding for courts and tribunals next year and increased maintenance spending to address what has been described as a crumbling court estate.
