(n.)
- Any outer garment slipped on to hide untidy clothing beneath such as a housecoat or apron.
Used in a sentence:
“So I ran in the house, threw on a cover-slut, and scurryfunged ferociously until the vicar knocked at my door."

Todays word: Coverslut
In the 1600s, a coverslut was an apron women wore while out gardening or cooking to conceal signs of their dirty work. Slut didn’t have the pejorative or sexually explicit sense it does today, but it did refer to a slovenly appearance.
Todays word: Dick-pot
Dick-pot is a word from the 1700s referring to the earthenware pots people filled with hot embers or coals to warm their cold feet. So, little old ladies worn dick-pots under their petticoats to keep them warm 😂

Spinster may have been a purely descriptive term (as slut once just meant girl/woman, hence "coverslut" being an apron), but it never denoted a favorable status the way alewife did.
Because at a certain social level EVERY woman knew the basics of spinning.

So disappointed 😔
