like yes we’ve been at recent comparative lows & obviously time is linear / this will get harder the longer it lasts, but i think the 5 year mark specifically has a tough pill to swallow for humans, even the most cautious among us.

a pal showed me this r/covidlonghaulers post and it broke my heart not only because it’s such a tale as old as time for chronic illness in a lot of ways, but also because i’ve heard more stories like this from consistently cautious people this year than in the past, despite the erosion of the state.
r/covidlonghaulers u/marceupial • 17m What would you do? My husband is tired of Covid precautions and I think he'll leave unless I lift them. I've been married for just over 25 years. My husband and I have always been very active and mostly gotten along pretty well. I got Covid in 2022 and it turned into long covid that lasted about 1.5 years. (Mostly fatigue that time.). Then I got sick again in 2024 and got Paxlovid into me right away, and didn't get any worse. Then I got Covid six months later (long stories how for each-I'd been masking with an N95 the whole time all and got unlucky with circumstances eg. Forced inside during a lightning storm in winter (!) and wasn't able to access my mask as it was in another building.) The third time I wasn't able to get Paxlovid and I got much worse long covid: dysautonomia (POTS), some MCAS, PEM/fatigue and crashes, gut motility issues and SIBO. My husband had to do somecaretaking during that time and was mostly cooperative with precautions because he had also had some long covid symptoms. It's been two years, and I'm about 90% recovered again and he's fully recovered, but he's very fatigued with our lack of social life and inability to attend things because we'd have to wear a mask and in many situations he now won't. He says he can't live like this anymore. I don't make enough to support myself, so I'd not be in great shape financially if he left. But that's where it's looking like we're headed. We had some marital problems related to our inability to be able to do fun things together anymore-we were always really active. I have a choice-l keep up the precautions, stay healthy and lose my marriage and stability and best friend (so may as well be dead) or | risk getting sick and hope that the Paxlovid and metformin I have on hand keep me from getting worse. And if they don't.... I don't know if I can go through it again.... But being healthy but socially isolated would be a death sentence too. What the hell do I do?

This person was infected with COVID twice and recovered. A 3rd infection brought manageable long COVID symptoms, but they were still able to work. After a 4th infection a few months ago, they haven’t recovered at all — showing how repeated infections can cause severe, lasting damage.

My infection in 2023 led to insomnia and increased anxiety, but I could still manage and work with Ambien for sleep and Ativan occasionally. This August I got another infection and all hell broke loose - internal vibrations, debilitating anxiety, constant flip-flopping feeling in my stomach, new phobias like driving, and I can't think anymore. I have such severe brain fog that it's scaring me. It feels like I've had a lobotomy. All my muscles are sore, including the ones in my head. It feels like a tight band squezing my brain all the time. I have constant sinus congestion and dizziness and high blood pressure now. It's hard to relax, ever. I've been out of work for 3 months. I have new paradoxical reactions or debilitating side effects with virtually every supplement and medication I've tried recently. Anihistamines make me hyperactive. Seroquel and trazadone do the same thing. Vitamin D gives me heart palpitations now. Magnesium makes me hyperactive too. SSRIs give me every side effect even at tiny doses. I can take small amounts of Ativan occasionally, but enough to actually calm my nervous system will give me a paradoxical reaction. It's exhausting and depressing. It feels like this virus has ripped apart my nervous system and I'm floundering. I've been searching this group for answers to all my symptoms, but it seems as if there are none. I guess "covidlonghaulers" is my new home while I hope for a miracle cure.

FYI- Not everyone with Long COVID cares about public health. This Reddit post shows a bunch that don't. Ones not masking because of mask fatigue, or "I can't live in fear," or "you do you" don't understand that it's not just about you but also those you can infect.
