I see selection pressures pushing us toward a barbell distribution:
Slopnet: open public protocols hosting a riotous ecology of AIs.
Cozyweb: closed commons with semipermeable boundaries.

I don't really see a clear path where we keep an open internet that is not mostly full of AIs talking to each other. We can't reliably detect AI content, it is cheap and easy to generate, and there are lots of incentives to do so, even besides scams.

Cozyweb and serendipity are in tension. Serendipity comes from openness/horizons. Strong boundaries can create some alluring mystery but not serendipity.

Posit: global social media is slowly being hollowed out by cozyweb groupchats/discords on the one hand, and ai slop on the other. This network effect breaks is slowly, then all at once through erosion by asymmetric competition.
Really goes to show how dominant network effects are in social media. Subgraphs of users migrate in big clumps but in between there's not much motion.
It drives home how zero-sum social media (or at least microblogging is).

I’m not able to get in a poasting groove with either bluesky or farcaster and kinda don’t care to try. I think between the twitter meltdown and the steadily increasing attention share of cozyweb tools (discord, slack, telegram), the habit has been fundamentally broken for me.

It's exhausting. Alt social media has enough purity spirals without this one.
