Today in everything is a metaphor, geoscientists have discovered that the craton, the enormous stable rock that forms the core of North America, is eroding away www.jsg.utexas.edu/news/2025/04...

This piece of granite comes from the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia. The unusual ball-shaped, radial clusters of crystals that you can see on this rock are orbicules. The diversity in the orbicules’ mineral composition & structure indicate that the conditions in the magma changed as they grew.

Australia’s Yilgarn Craton kind of looks like Mars. The region might help us learn more about Martian geochemistry, too.

Another one of my artworks based on the geology of Western Australia - it’s my inspiration as seen from above..
I have 4.4 billion years of Earth's history to look at

The oldest rocks in Western Australia are found in the Pilbara Craton and the Yilgarn Craton.

The Canadian Shield is a large area of exposed Precambrian igneous and high-grade metamorphic rocks. It forms the North American Craton, the ancient geologic core of the North American continent.

☄️ Earth’s Oldest Impact Crater

Scientists have found a 3.47-billion-year-old meteorite crater in Australia - the oldest confirmed on Earth!

Evidence from shattered rocks suggests ancient impacts may have shaped early continents.
