A good day for Autumn Gentian (Gentianella amarella) yesterday on Cronkley Fell. #botany

Some rather chonky examples of Fir Clubmoss (Huperzia selago) from Cronkley Fell today. Well worth the sore knees! #botany #teesdale

Also in the fabulous botanical enclosures on Cronkley Fell Teesdale, Mountain Avens. The ‘gone-over’ heads were just as attractive as the fresh flowers #WildFlowerHour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

There’s something special about seeing a plant that’s only found in one place in the world. This is Teesdale Rockrose, the levigatum subspecies of Hoary Rockrose, on Cronkley Fell on Friday #WildFlowerHour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

How does increasing winter temperature affect sensitive alpine vegetation? 🌍🧪
I showed my colleagues our experiment. A windy day on Cronkley fell. At least a couple of Gentians were blooming. Rabbits had gone mayhem in some chambers. Cosy for them?

The Spring Gentians are out on Cronkley Fell. In Northern Europe they are only found in #Teesdale and some parts of Ireland

Field work in Upper Teesdale
Today on Cronkley Fell. I've got Open Top Chambers to investigate the effect of Winter warming and grazed and un-grazed plots. It's difficult to keep out some grazers 🐇🤬
This project have now run for 6 winters and things are happening.
I found a lovely Moonwort 💚

Cow Green & down past Cauldron Snout is another amazing walk, & then of course there's Cronkley Fell. Pretty much everywhere you go is beautiful at that time of year. Riverside, bogs, fellside, meadows - so much wonderful habitat. Favourites were fields of Globeflowers, fields of Marsh Marigolds,

Cauldron Snout & Cronkley Scar at the heart of the #NorthPennines AONB, is a “must do” Teesdale walk. It is an impressive waterfall beneath Cow Green Reservoir, perhaps more impressive than better known High Force. Details at tinyurl.com/394j6baa

If you're after a cottage then there are a couple of beautifully sited ones at Holwick (Sykes website). May be a little basic for some, but perfect for most ecologists as an easy walk to high force, low force & also up onto Cronkley Fell. I usually go June-July, but depends on what you hope to see!

I once worked at a place called Cronkley Fell in Upper Teesdale, monitoring the remains of early medieval longhouses while fences were put up to protect England's last juniper forest... the smell each morning was incredible!

I wonder if the inhabitants of those longhouses brewed similar ales?

Stunning part of the world! (I'm biased!)
When you do go, approach the Nick from the East to get the full effect!
Its about an 11km journey from Cow Green reservoir car park.

Also in the area, High Force and Falcon Clints / Cronkley scar.

As I swam in the tarns below Cronkley Scar, Lapwings came to the shore to drink and wash, while Wheatears flitted between grass and rocks, Wigeons whistled overhead and a Greylag gosling lay "sleeping". #UpperTeesdale #DurhamDales #BirdsSeenIn2024 9/10

As we scrambled down Cronkley Scar to the tarns, couldn't have guessed the wonders it held, incl. spears of Shoreweed (Littorella uniflora), new for me, & perhaps ?Fennel Pondweed (Stuckenia pectinata) & ? Streamside Moss (Leptodictyum riparium).#WildflowerID #Wildflowerhour 8/10

At end of May, in the crystal clear waters of a shallow tarn below Cronkley Fell in Upper Teesdale, I was transported by a completely unexpected exquisite world of delicate, unfamiliar waterplants, strobe lit by an alchemy of sunlight, wavelets & scudding clouds. #MySwim 🧵1/10

Wow, how exciting, thanks for that! Floating Club-Rush (Isolepis fluitans) is new for me; I really struggled to think what that plant was as it didn't really look much like Fennel Pondweed. I have accordingly updated my @inaturalist.bsky.social record www.inaturalist.org/observations...
