This is a lovely sentiment. Truly. But it's at crosspurposes with this platform's very design. You can have an open microblogging platform with Twitter-esque affordances, or you can have a cosy cave with good vibes. You cannot have both.

The way that these spaces work is through the enshrining of our feelings. After all, what is Mark Zuckerberg’s content-free yearning for “masculine energy” but a vibe? An emotion? The inconvenient intractability and insistence of facts, of contrary points of view, of other people simply existing, often works at crosspurposes with our ids. Part of becoming an adult is, of course, learning to navigate and deal with that. But social media does nothing to encourage such tendencies—and it is noteworthy that tech barons like Musk and Zuckerberg appear to be indulging in nothing so much as a stunted adolescence that they insist on inflicting on the rest of us as endless punishment for threatening the sanctity of their delusions. What is more remarkable is how many others wish to join that particular Mirror World of eternal infancy. The decline in social trust is attributable at least in part to such indulgences; even as we’ve witnessed genuine institutional failures, there was also a collapse in trust driven by those who were shocked and outraged that, say, a public health institution could tell someone to wear a mask or get vaccinated. Or that an independent news media might ever suggest that their favourite president was wrong about something. While such sentiments spread rapidly online, helping even the most maniacal people feel less alone in their mania, it’s tempting to think that we can somehow redirect that outrage against institutions in ways that are productive. People are already mad, we just need to win the virality game to get them mad at the right things, surely. But that neglects the allure of these perspectives in the first place: their selfishness.

This question, though, is quite like the practice of law. You have two people making two disjointed factual statements, at crosspurposes, maybe, but not necessarily contradicting each other, and have to evaluate which can be used to support or counter some jackass unidentified third argument.

There are at least, what, 5 factions running their own playbook in the administration? Some of it has to be at crosspurposes with the funding cuts and staff terminations being directly harmful to the programs that were in place but limiting capacity to retool.

Without a common mission and purpose to guide the U.S.-Israeli partnership, the relationship will continue drifting, and disagreements on key strategic challenges will threaten the interests of both allies. Today not only is there no common vision and strategy, but Israeli and U.S. policies seem to be working at crosspurposes on key issues. Israeli and U.S. policymakers at the highest levels should outline a common vision to ensure a lasting partnership that effectively addresses their most important challenges. This has to start with a commitment by leaders on both sides. Formulating a common mission is a shared project. Yet the burden is largely on Israel to adapt to new strategic and political realities because Israel has the most at stake in the partnership as well as the most to lose from its deterioration. As former Mossad chief Efraim Halevy has written, "in order to become a valuable ally, Israel has had to seek and nurture assets and capabilities of its own, of such caliber as to impress upon Washington that not only was the State of Israel here to stay, but that its activities and influence would stand the U.S. in good stead." To 11 successive U.S. presidents, Israel's leadership has successfully articulated a strategy and vision that both complemented broader U.S. goals and made Israel a vital component of pursuing those objectives. Israel's leadership needs to urgently restore that vital link and connection. The goal is all the more important because the United States has been struggling to articulate a coherent set of policies to address the tectonic shifts under way in the Middle East since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. To preserve the vitality of the U.S.-Israeli partnership, Israel should adapt and make itself indispensable in helping pursue U.S. objectives in an evolving Middle East strategic environment. Without a clearer Israeli strategy of how Israel fits into the U.S. vision of the Middle East, the partnership will continue to drift, with unforeseen consequences for EFTA01168842
