Its owner would have pressed it into wax on official documents as a form of signature. The bodkin (centre) was a multi-purpose tool used by women as a hairpin and for threading ribbons and laces into clothing. It has a tiny spoon on the end for cleaning ears (people also re-used ear way on the end of threads to help them thread needles when sewing). The dress hook (right) was used to fasten clothing, such as a cloak, or to hook up a skirt to stop it dragging on dirty streets. Three Medieval floor tiles, one terracotta with pale design, one geometric triangles and one with crosswork. 1200s to 1300S Archaeologists found decorated floor tiles on an area of the site close to the location of medieval luxury riverside townhouses. The bishops of Malling and Battle Abbey had houses here, and a noble house called Dunley's Place was also nearby. These tiles may have come from such properties as they were expensive. 1. Spoons, late 1500s to late 16o0s One spoon is decorated with the bust of King William Ill at the end of the handle. It may have commemorated his coronation in 1694. It was found in a rubbish dump with other household waste. Someone deliberately cut off the bowl from another spoon but we don't know why. 2. Writing tools, 1400s to 15005 The goose's wing bone (left has been carved into a point at one end. It is possibly an ink pen but without a split in the nib it would be hard to write with. It could be a nail cleaner or something else. The bone stylus (right) was used for writing notes on wax tablets. 3.
