Not sure about the structures but the black, sooty-looking patches are likely to be Sooty Bark Disease, Cryptostroma corticale.

Sooty bark disease (Cryptostroma corticale) - Forest Research
Sooty bark disease is a fungal disease of maple trees, which causes rapid wilting and mortality particularly in sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus).

The latent presence of Cryptostroma corticale (causal agent of the sooty bark disease) is widespread among French sycamore maple populations. Host density and water deficit seem to drive the silent spread of the pathogen. See our paper: doi.org/10.1111/ppa.... @umr-iam.bsky.social
Widespread Latent Presence of Cryptostroma corticale in Sycamore Maple in France
Increasing drought events promote forest disease emergence, exemplified by Sooty Bark Disease (SBD) of Acer pseudoplatanus caused by Cryptostroma corticale. Across six French regions, the pathogen wa....

STSM Report of the Week

This study develops a LAMP assay for detecting Cryptostroma corticale, a major pathogen affecting sycamore maple trees. This rapid diagnostic tool improves forest health monitoring and biosecurity.

Moin 💚☕️

#UK: #climate change can kill #trees:
Cryptostroma corticale or sooty bark disease has started to affect sycamore trees weakened by drought in 2022 in the east of the country. The fungus infects the main living tissue of the tree. Sixty have so far been felled on National Trust land.
