I'll be writing reviews of the games I've been playing.
Starting with: Crystalis (NES)
All in All a very worthwhile play of a very fun game.

Had to think back a fair bit for these. Most of these were my introduction to their respective genres/series, or ones that really stuck with me over the years (I wouldn't be the RPG fan I am today without KOTOR, for example).

"The story [of] Crystalis is one about a team who was attempting to operate on multiple fronts. SNK thought their pedigree in the arcades would suit the RPG genre well, but things didn't quite work out according to their plan."

Crystalis is amazing! Blaster Master and Guardian Legend are a couple others that come to mind. Palamedes can be super addictive too. I have so much love for the system

Surprisingly yeah! Crystalis is another banger that's surprisingly inexpensive too! The NES has its fair share of costly games but you can get some great titles for under $20.

Share a moment when a game was stolen/lost.

I was 12 when I spent days looking for my NES copy of Crystalis (one of my two most influential games, ever). Then I remembered that a 7 year old cousin was at home with us—my mother was looking out for him for some hours. He never admited it but we knew.

For every Mega Man or Final Fantasy or Crystalis you had 14 bad arcade ports and piles of licensed poop made in 3 months tops to score a quick buck

Sure as hell don't see anyone looking back fondly on Athena or Tag Team Pro Wrestling or Karate Kid or Uncanny X-Men!

#My9Games

Of course, so many additional mentions; pretty much any Final Fantasy before XI, Zelda I & III, Guardian Legend and Crystalis, Solaris and Star Raiders, "the classics" (Pac, Mario, Metroid, etc)

WEIRDLY, Pokemon Go wasn't available in the list- it shoulda been there.

As I’m seeing these go around again I have another 9 to add to the mix. Wishbringer is the first PC text game I ever played. The bottom row is Zelda 2, Link to the Past and Crystalis.

Ocarina of Time isn't necessarily an RPG. You'll find it more akin to your previously-mentioned Crystalis.

Chrono Trigger is an extremely solid title. Both can easily be played on modern consoles too!
September 24, 2026 at 12:04 AM
Full disclosure: the RPG isn't my go-to genre. There are ones that I've played and enjoyed, like Crystalis, Shining in the Darkness, and Secret of Mana. I was a fighting game guy.

But I could kick myself in the keister for not having tried Chrono Trigger and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
I'm curious now after mulling over some of the famous or well-loved games I haven't played through or not played at all.

What are some of yours, peeps? That you might also feel you've missed out on, should have played, or just never caught your interest.

One of mine is the OG Legend of Zelda.

Super easy to set up DOSBox, Nestopia, SNES9x and whatever else

86Box and MAME take a bit more but it's worth it
