Biodiversity was a smash hit this trip- we saw toucans, red macaws, frigate birds, three species of monkey (howler, spider, and capuchin), poison dart frogs, agoutis, basilisks, and some very excellent insects. Enjoy these few I was able to photograph with my phone.

Their focus and intensity is unnerving. A currasow is the scariest bird menacing I have experienced, what with the powerful legs and bone helmet for good measure.

It’s a Great Currasow. They’re not very common here anymore, so it’s awesome to have them nearby. The male is all black with a bright yellow waddle. He’s come around the past two days. I’m going to try to get a photo.

Need a distraction? This Great Currasow (female) has been coming right up to the house and seems to have adopted our side jungle. Yesterday, she brought her mate, but he was shy and I haven’t gotten a photo yet (the males are black with a bright yellow waddle).🪶

Feels like it’s time for the bird.

No silly, not that kind!

My current favorite bird — the Great Currasow. 🤩 We were lucky to have one cross our road right in front of us yesterday (and then she just meandered). Her mohawk is amazing!

Today, as I was driving down the mountain in the 4x4, a Great Currasow crossed in front of me. I wish I’d gotten a better shot, but it was quick. 🙏🏽 These are big, gorgeous birds… 🪶

The male looks more reigned in, with dark eyes, shorter head feathers and that magnificent yellow bulbous addition.

Great Currasow (female)
La Garita, Costa Rica

Great Curassow (Crax rubra) Very large game bird (about the size of a turkey), resident of tropical forests, eliminated from most areas by hunting. Rarely found except in protected parks or very remote areas. #birds #wildflock #photography #currasow

Great Currasow (female)
La Garita, Costa Rica

Large, robust bird 91cm (36") tall weighing 4 kg (10lb), the size of a smallish turkey. Gregarious in Costa Rica where I've been fortunate to see them in the wild several times. #bird #photography #crazyheadfeathers #costarica

One of my Costa Rica memories is of the giant birds that came for their daily feeding at the hotel we were at near the Arenal volcano. They looked like they could be baby pterodactyls.

@cryptidchicken.bsky.social points out the Great Currasow which is now extirpated from Peru and not in my guide, but would have been in the range back in the day. Definitely a strong candidate. I am not yet eating a hat, but I’ll lay in some hat sauce.
