It looks, at first, like a ruin. The rough fieldstones, the iron-barred arches, the ivy claiming every crack — it reads as something that grew rather something built. That is the point. Prince Henry had this grotto constructed on the shore of the Grienericksee around the 1760s–70s as a deliberate act of anti-courtly theatre. Where the formal garden said order, the grotto said elsewhere. The single burst of red climbing Virginia creeper against the grey stone is the garden still speaking, colour placed where the eye will find it, nothing accidental. Exterior of a low, wide building constructed from rough grey fieldstones, set within a park landscape. The facade is largely covered in dark green ivy, with a vivid burst of red climbing creeper beside the central arched entrance. Three arched openings are visible two barred windows flanking a larger barred door, and two smaller round windows sit above. Trees frame the building on both sides against a hazy pale sky. The ground in front is bare sandy earth edged with rough grass. These are the garden sculptures of Prince Henry's Rheinsberg, classical warrior figures in Roman lorica armour, their helmets crested with eagles and lions, commissioned from the Italian sculptor Giovanni Antonio Cybei. Taken from their outdoor positions for conservation, they have been brought inside the grotto and secured to wooden frames. The white stone has gone green at the edges with moss; the bases are cracked. They are not yet lost, but they are somewhere between the garden they were made for and whatever comes next. The eagle-crested helmet on the left figure is worth noting: the Prussian heraldic eagle, here worn as a warrior's crest. Even in storage, the dynastic language persists. Interior of a vaulted stone room showing three tall stone sculptures stored upright on low wooden platforms and secured with metal straps to vertical wooden frames. The figures are classical Roman warrior types in full armour lorica segmentata breastplates, military skirts, greaves, each with a differently crested helmet: left figure has an eagle crest, centre figure has a plain visored helmet, right figure has what appears to be a lion or dragon crest. The stone is pale sandstone with patches of green moss and algae. The room has whitewashed walls and a barrel-vaulted ceiling with peeling plaster. Dead leaves are scattered on the concrete floor.
