Delightful day trip to Cardiff today to see the fabulous GWEN JOHN exhibition: STRANGE BEAUTIES. Such an amazing show - the biggest ever, I believe - showcasing her oils, watercolours & drawings.

I love how she uses different permutations of colour & form to create these luminous artworks! #Art

Detail of a John Singer Sargent watercolour (NMW A 2610) in raking light, which reveals the rough texture of the watercolour paper. Raking light is helpful as it shows surface texture & planar distortions. I love it because it returns 3-dimensionality to paper works too often thought of as “flat”

Can’t stop looking at this macro detail of an unfinished Gwen John painting - the texture of the paint, the weave visible through the chalky ground, the perfect harmony between the lilac background and graphite-grey-black hair and putty-toned skin and berried lips… (Amgueddfa Cymru NMW A 4928)

Stuck at home editing some writing on Gwen John and trying to choose images from her huge series of watercolours depicting people in church. Each time I look I find more that are new to me. I like this lady in on a scrap of paper, studying her prayer book. (Amgueddfa Cymru, NMW A 15316)

And here’s the whole work, one of John’s figures in church series (NMW A 15363) depicting the parishioners, nuns, and orphans who attended services at the Catholic church in Meudon. Beautiful expressionistic colourways flourish in these works, like the purples and greens seen here

Turning the page in this Ceri Richards’ sketchbook leads to a startling experience - suddenly you are thrust directly into the artist’s body, lying in a hospital bed, contemplating your own toes & the room beyond & your hand holding the blank page that then became this very drawing. (NMW A 13703)

And here’s something of Gaudier-Brzeska’s at Amgueddfa Cymru: an angular yet cuddly self-contained dachshund (NMW A 305), cast in aluminium from the original marble carving & gifted by Kettle’s Yard in 1966. Here’s his twin, in typically perfect placement at that Cambridge paradise of Modernism

Currently assessing a very large David Jones work on paper, Mehefin (1950) - here is a tiny detail. The white paint is showing evidence of losses so it's going under the microscope for very close observation to see whether any consolidation is required. Amgueddfa Cymru NMW A 3208
