I have three goals:

Get ASCP certified in cytogenetics before the end of the year

Find my passion to do art again and do it regularly

Become stronger

Cytogenetics Technician Trainee Interview today!
I would specifically be working with FISH cytogenetics
Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization.

Lets talk about what all this means!

First the lingo:
Cyto=Cell
Genetics=DNA (Specifically chromosomal here)
FISH = Fluorescence In Situ Hybridyzation

Related but cool combo of cytogenetics and phenotype. Know when the first QTL was mapped?

Excited to share our new paper in #MolEcol on sex chromosome evolution in African killifish! 🐟 A great collaboration with @alexandrsember.bsky.social . We uncovered ≥4 sex chromosome turnovers across Nothobranchius spp. using cytogenetics & genomics.

Hey all,
Popping in to talk about cool cases I’ve seen at work.
First:
Y chromosome & pregnant

What do I do:
I am a cytogenetics technician.
The heck is that:
I get to look at chromosomes/genetics for abnormalities.
To clarify, when I say abnormalities, I mean things that aren’t ‘typical’

Born in 1897, Janaki Ammal was a trailblazing botanist in plant breeding, genetics & cytogenetics.

She overcame gender & caste discrimination & was the first Indian woman to obtain a PhD in botany in the U.S.

Ammal promoted conservation & was a pioneer of indigenous environmental approaches.

At the Weizmann Institute of Science, she did the work she had been trained for. In cytogenetics, she was part of a team advancing early prenatal diagnostics, helping lay the groundwork for amniocentesis. It was careful, technical work, largely out of public view.

The cytogenetics of Acanthocephala is a neglected area.
This 2023 paper provides a chromosome analysis and documents the occurrence of B chromosomes in the fish parasite Acanthocephalus anguillae 🧪

Not #Boechera!
We used genomics, cytogenetics & phylogenetics to reveal that the mysterious Boechera calcarea is actually Parryodes calcarea - a rare Asian member of the Arabideae tribe (Brassicaceae):

The more I think about this..the more confused I am.
This person works in cytogenetics and literally part of their job is to look for abnormalities in chromosomes..

But they also teach us to see the abnormalities, not what they mean.
Overhearing my coworkers talking about trans people with “yeah there are only two sexes but we should still respect people”

Intersex people exist. Biology is messy af. This ‘borderline’ talk doesn’t help.

Anyway I’m having a mini panic attack lol

“Actually don’t know the science “. Yep! After the Olympics controversy every halfwit on Twitter became an overnight expert in cytogenetics somehow while only being able to read and argue at a fourth grade level. Astounding.
