📢 Viewpoint in New Phyt. on polyploid establishment!
Key take-homes🧵
1. In contrast to earlier hypotheses that pollinators can help new polyploids establish, we suggest that pollinators mainly prevent polyploid establishment because outcrossing increases the strength of minority cytotype exclusion.

It seems we are overcoming the minority cytotype disadvantage and successfully establishing in a new habitat. 🌱
Something is happening. Right now, we get more reposting and liking of the same posts on BlueSky than on Twitter.

I feel like cytotype has a bunch of other connotations creating baggage. Like individuals with the same ploidy share a cytotype. I just take my glasses off and then with and without the dash look the same.

The second Ph.D. chapter thesis of Diane Douet is now published in @journal-evo.bsky.social. Diane studied the impact of self-fertilization and pollen limitation on autopolyploid establishment under gametophytic self-incompatibility.

Congratulations Diane!

Found everything from one giant monstrous petal to ten, except for nine. It’s common to find the occasional four or sixer all over the place, but this is…odd.

The Louisiana ones are an unusual cytotype, but that’s very old and sparse data no one was followed up on (yet).

Forgot to post this one!

I would love to find out the cytotype of R. tripartitus when it turns up in newly dug pond in a new county.
Or find out how related they are to other populations.

Thus, Piwi silences the P-element through the rapid turnover of nascent transcripts prior to their splicing. Without the TEsup-exosome axis, P-cytotype flies show severe gonadal atrophy and are completely sterile.

The second Ph.D. chapter of Diane's thesis is out as a preprint. She studied the joint evolution of autopolyploidy and self-fertilization under a gametophytic self-incompatibility context.

Am I the only person fed up of:

Cell-type
Vs
Cell type

Especially when:
Cell-type-specific
Cell type-specific

In this era of single cell sequencing & cell type specific effects, I feel we need a single word to describe cell-type. Maybe:

Cytotype?

Thoughts? And how do we make it catch on

With C. pratensis it is probably inconsequential but for something like Parnassia palustris which has one cytotype far more threatened than the other having separate names and assessments etc would be good

Parasite communities and prevalence were similar in sexual diploid and asexual polyploid Lumbriculus variegatus but prevalence tracked local cytotype frequencies, revealing both positive and negative frequency-dependent parasitism:

First time running flow cytometry in about seven years, and my resampled single-cytotype populations have remained the same. Comforting to know grad school Brittany wasn't terrible at this. :D

Polyploidy was often thought to be an evolutionary dead-end. At the population level, neopolyploids are subject to minority cytotype exclusion, which poses severe reproductive challenges to nascent polyploids.
May 8, 2026 at 2:52 PM
Polyploidization or whole genome duplication is a major driver in plant speciation. It creates instant barriers to gene flow, especially between individuals of different ploidy levels. (2/6)
