Dairy cows in Nevada found to be infected with Influenza H5N1 (bird flu) genotype D1.1, presumably contracted from wild birds. D1.1 genotype is different from the B3.13 genotype which is causing a multistate H5N1 outbreak in dairy cattle.

And while this sounds like good news, the H5N1 situation remains grim. There has been an explosion of human cases, both of this genotype (D1.1) and the cow genotype (B3.13). More sequences from humans is a trend we need to reverse—we need fewer humans infected, period.

CDC just confirmed the first severe case of #H5N1 in the US in a patient in Louisiana. This virus seems to be the same genotype D1.1 that is spreading in birds at the moment (so not the cattle genotype B3.13) that severely sickened the teenager in Canada.

CORRECTION: Genotype D1.1 has been responsible for some (not most) human infections to date and most case have been mild. Genotype D1.1 has a mutation that may increase its ability to spread from animals to humans but does not seem to influence ability to spread from humans to humans.
