A parent at a DC middle school is urging staff to reconsider its new curriculum, which removes all full-length novels from the 8th grade curriculum

Opinion: DCPS middle-schoolers should be reading novels

ICE then issued a statement that they weren't there to actually "detain" anybody. This is clearly contradicted by videos, witnesses, and a statement by DCPS headquarters. ICE was there for an abduction, people ran out and confronted them, so they left.

I wrote an op-ed for The 51st arguing that DCPS middle-schoolers need to be reading full-length novels to build concentration, empathy, and strong foundational reading skills

“Even after the D.C. Council set aside additional funds to continue green card sponsorships, DCPS says it simply won’t spend the money.”

on a personal note, my wife is a DCPS teacher who has been evaluated to perform at the highest level every year since DCPS started doing evaluations.

There’s a real chance she’ll get fired in the middle of the school year if the R CR passes and DC has to cut a billion dollars overnight

Since about 2001, in many schools across the country, literacy instruction has become less systematic — and less effective, a local teacher writes.

How she says DCPS and the DCPS Reading Clinic have charted a different path:
Opinion: DCPS is making needed progress on early childhood literacy
The DCPS Reading Clinic is working for young D.C. students, writes an English language support teacher.

Gotta love seeing the VP’s kid pull-up for a soccer game at your kid’s DCPS. Hope you enjoy using the facilities your dad is actively working to destroy, kid!

Pour one out for DCPS parents, who have not had kids in school for a full 5-day week since the second week of January (two total 5-day weeks since mid-December).
NWS has updated their alerts for the storm:

* Beltway area is now under a Winter Weather Advisory.

* A more significant Winter Storm Warning for areas W, N, E, and SE of Beltway area, where NWS expects heavier snow that could reach or exceed 5"

* Blizzard Warning on the Eastern Shore (yikes!!)

My kids go to Spanish dual-language schools in DCPS with wonderful teachers, and this will hurt DC kids.
DCPS promised them green cards. Now, these international teachers have nowhere to turn.
More than 200 teachers may soon have to leave the country because of what they say are broken promises from the city's school system.

Glad my kid’s DCPS 2nd grade classroom can’t afford pencils without PTA donations but at least we have the National Guard rolling through the streets for no reason.

Interesting: One of the biggest users of H1-B visas in D.C. is @dcpublicschools.bsky.social, which got 183 in 2024 and 2025 so far. (DCPS appears in two separate categories below; I combined them.) If $100,000 fee for new visa applications goes into effect, I bet DCPS will use far fewer.

Some 200 teachers who took jobs with DCPS under the expectation that the school system would sponsor a green card are now facing uncertain futures.

Even after the D.C. Council set aside additional funds for the program, DCPS says it won’t spend the money, @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports:

As a parent of a now middle-schooler, I'm really hoping and expecting that by the time she hits 8th grade she's reading novels in school. But that's not happening everywhere in D.C., as I learned from this informative op-ed in @51st.news: 51st.news/opinion-dcps...
