Good question. Generally no, the device must be placed in DFU mode for this to work. That takes a deliberate multi-step process.
Also, the exploit abuses a very low-level bug in the USB controller that the default Mac/PC USB stack can’t normally reach. Hence the cheap microcontroller.

Is it possible for malware on a laptop/PC to wait for the user to connect an iPhone and then try to do this? Or would a user not typically use that specific cable?
