My statement on DMPS Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts.
Des Moines is the semi-liberal bastion in Des Moines, and the Des Moines Public Schools are one of the particular bugbears for the Iowa GOP. This is absolutely a specific political attack on the DMPS, on the African community in Des Moines, and on the most diverse city in the state.

I have a difficult time believing that DMPS did not know of his immigration status. FBI background checks occur for all DMPS employees.

Des Moines Public Schools says it "did not have any knowledge" of any order for removal for Roberts (ICE has said this happened in May 2024)
ICE has said a loaded gun was found in a district vehicle. DMPS policy prohibits weapons on school grounds or at school related activity 3/

Great news. DMPS deserved a win for once
Overshadowed by many other important races today: voters in Des Moines, Iowa approved a $265 million school bond issue.
(A month ago many thought bond had no chance of getting 60% because of the scandal surrounding the former DSM superintendent who's now facing federal charges.)

You might mention how regardless of the facts, this was not done in a way that has any consideration for the traumatizing effect on the kids of DMPS of arresting him with zero notice to the school district.

I live in Des Moines, am doing my practicum in DMPS. We are floored. This is terrorism. They are sending a message to our students and our community.
