Run a session in their backstory for them, give em a short sidequest. Let them figure out a lil more about themselves and their story.
Trust me! It's so worth it!

If a race/species/monster/character is not as interesting as you would like them to be, then make them be that interesting, it's your world. Rules as written are overly limiting. Things shouldn't be so black and white, nothing is.

When I was playing an NPC, I often asked the players for directions on what the NPC should do. Even a mighty sorcerer would need input on where to direct their attacks. When it landed, the players felt just as powerful as if they threw the spell. #dmtip

Use what your players give you to build them into the world. Whether it be 5 words, or 5 pages, make them a part of the world.
Players/characters with no real ties to anything, will likely feel out of place.
PS - Trying hard to keep sanity, so watch for more of these.

Railroading.
Doing this in your game, isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just means you have specific plot points you want to happen in your story. The players can do whatever they want, while still getting to your plot point. Many rpg video games are like this too.

For "heroic fantasy" games, halve the HP and double the number of monsters in 5e/5.5e.
You can ALWAYS provide more encounters, you can't always get another chance for a PC to do the heroic, interesting thing.
Lean into the Duncan Idaho, Alice, Motoko, Blade, Belmont fantasy with lethality.
