I ask my players a question about their characters the day before each game.

Today's question was:
What is their favorite scent? Does it remind them of anything?

Fellow DMs ... the next time the group can't play but you want to run something, see if one of the group can join you.

Run a session in their backstory for them, give em a short sidequest. Let them figure out a lil more about themselves and their story.

Trust me! It's so worth it!

Don't use phylactery. Not the object, just the word.

In Judaism a phylactery is a positive thing to ward off disease or for prayer.

Call it something else, please. I'll be using Soul Gem or something similar.

Have players submit rumors about their characters to share at the start of a game. I usually have them submit 5 -- 1 false, 2 true and positive about their character, 2 true and negative about their character. Don't forget some bar room exaggeration for fun. #GMTip #DMTip

We just enjoy making time for ttrpgs. #dmtip to consistent games: we play on the same day, same time every week. Our inner clock says "time to roll dice".

If a race/species/monster/character is not as interesting as you would like them to be, then make them be that interesting, it's your world. Rules as written are overly limiting. Things shouldn't be so black and white, nothing is.

Let the players coach your NPCs

When I was playing an NPC, I often asked the players for directions on what the NPC should do. Even a mighty sorcerer would need input on where to direct their attacks. When it landed, the players felt just as powerful as if they threw the spell. #dmtip

#DnD #DMtip Short rests don't need to be a full hour if it doesn't fit the narrative. A short rest can be any brief respite from danger- a sandwich, a smoke break, a moment to catch your breath. Don't deny your players this viable resource on account of The Story.

🎲 DM Tip of the Day:
Be consistent. 🌍📜

Worldbuilding details, rules, and NPC motivations should follow a logical thread. A consistent world feels real—and keeps your players immersed in the adventure.

Track resources. 🕯️🍞

Hunger, light sources, or dwindling spell slots can add tension and realism to long journeys. Resource management turns a simple trek into a thrilling challenge.

Not every fight has to be “kill everything.” ⚔️🗝️

Add objectives like holding the line, escaping danger, or retrieving a key item to keep combat dynamic and exciting. Creative goals make every battle unique!

🎲 DM Tip of the Day:
Let players feel powerful. 💪✨

Give your players moments of true triumph—an epic spell, a heroic save, or a clever solution. These victories keep them excited to dive back into the adventure.

🎲 DM Tip of the Day:
Create moral dilemmas. ⚖️🌀

Present choices that challenge your players’ ethics and force tough decisions. The grey areas make for compelling drama and unforgettable storytelling moments.

Use what your players give you to build them into the world. Whether it be 5 words, or 5 pages, make them a part of the world.

Players/characters with no real ties to anything, will likely feel out of place.

PS - Trying hard to keep sanity, so watch for more of these.

🎲 DM Tip of the Day:
Foreshadow future events. 🔮🌌

Dropping subtle hints about upcoming dangers or storylines builds anticipation and keeps players invested. A cryptic prophecy or a recurring symbol can work wonders.

Mysteries need clues. 🕵️‍♂️🗝️

Always include multiple ways for players to uncover vital information. If one clue gets missed, another should lead them forward. Keep the intrigue alive without stalling the story.

Railroading.

Doing this in your game, isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just means you have specific plot points you want to happen in your story. The players can do whatever they want, while still getting to your plot point. Many rpg video games are like this too.

🎲 DM Tip of the Day:
Challenge them with puzzles. 🧩🔍

Riddles, traps, or logic challenges break up combat and encourage teamwork. A well-placed puzzle can spark creativity and make problem-solving part of the adventure.

Prep just enough. 🗺️✍️

Over-preparation can box you in. Leave room to improvise and adapt to your players’ unexpected choices—they’ll take the story to places you never imagined!

For "heroic fantasy" games, halve the HP and double the number of monsters in 5e/5.5e.

You can ALWAYS provide more encounters, you can't always get another chance for a PC to do the heroic, interesting thing.

Lean into the Duncan Idaho, Alice, Motoko, Blade, Belmont fantasy with lethality.
