I know govt bodies can be very slow moving, but full credit to the NSW DPIRD media team, who very graciously fact checked some paras for an important biosecurity story coming out Monday morning.

Would rather check with researchers now, than have a correction later!

NSW Leads World-First Australian Grayling Conservation Breakthrough
The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has achieved a world-first conservation milestone by successfully breeding endangered Australian Grayling in captivity at the Port Stephens Fisheries Institute. The achievement marks the first significant breeding attempt for the species in captivity and establishes NSW as a leader in conservation breeding for one of Australia's most threatened native fish species. The breakthrough gives fisheries scientists a practical new tool with the potential to boost numbers in the wild and support the long term recovery of the species. Researchers captured wild Australian Grayling broodstock, acclimatised them to hatchery conditions and used hormone-induced spawning to produce healthy larvae from viable eggs with fertility rates exceeding 85%. Significantly, the team also recorded natural spawning in captivity, demonstrating the species adapts readily to hatchery care, handling and breeding. NSW DPIRD Director Freshwater Fisheries and Threatened Species, Cameron Lay said the result represents a breakthrough for threatened species recovery. "This is a significant achievement and a major step forward in our efforts to secure the future of Australian Grayling," Mr Lay said. "Our teams have demonstrated for the first time that this endangered species can be successfully bred in captivity, creating new opportunities to...

Bird Flu Detected In Wild Bird In Lake Macquarie
Mirage News Bird Flu Detected In Wild Bird In Lake Macquarie A greater crested tern found in Lake Macquarie has tested positive for H5 avian influenza (bird flu), with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) leading the response. The detection is part of the broader national response to H5 avian influenza in wild birds. NSW DPIRD continues to monitor the situation closely and is working with local councils, land managers and other agencies across the state. The risk to the public remains low. Human infections are rare and the virus does not spread easily between people. Avoiding contact with sick or dead wildlife is the best way to reduce risk. What should residents do? If you see a sick, injured or dead wild bird: Avoid Do not touch or handle the bird. Keep children and pets away from the area. Record Note the location, date and time. If safe to do so, take a photo and record the type and number of birds affected. Report Complete the NSW Government online reporting form. Or call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. Community members are encouraged to report sightings of sick or dead birds directly...

Trout Fishing Season Returns To NSW Waterways
Recreational fishers are expected to head to rivers, streams and lakes across NSW this October Labour Day long weekend as the 2026–27 trout fishing season officially opens on Saturday 3 October. The opening marks the return of trout fishing to inland waterways following the annual winter closure, which helps protect spawning fish and supports the long-term sustainability of NSW trout fisheries. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Program Leader Fish Stocking and Enhancement Operations, Jim Harnwell, said the Department was expecting plenty of anglers to head to the rivers, streams and lakes across NSW to celebrate the opening of the 2026-27 season. "The NSW Government is again supporting recreational fishing opportunities and helping drive visitation to regional communities through DPIRD's fish stocking program which will see millions of trout and salmon released into waterways across the state. DPIRD's Dutton and Gaden trout hatcheries play a key role in maintaining fish stocks for recreational fishing opportunities, producing millions of trout and salmon that are stocked into waterways across NSW each year. "The NSW Government's fish stocking program continues to boost fishing opportunities and attract visitors to NSW, whilst operating under strict management controls to ensure sustainability of trout fisheries...

Here's what's making news in the South West and Great Southern WA regions today. Bremer birds tested for Avian Influenza Several birds have been taken for testing after being found dead on Western Australia's southern coastline. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said the birds, found in Bremer Bay, were taken for testing on Friday after presenting a risk for H5 avian influenza. While the species has not been confirmed, DPIRD said it had received no reports of any further spread of bird flu since July 17. Australia has recorded 484 positive cases, including 10 in Western Australia.
