#DTRPG
To be clear, since my original post wasn't:

DTRPG: About 24% Paid
Itch: About 2% Paid
November 2, 2026 at 8:23 PM
After many thousands of downloads, it's interesting to compare the % of free vs paid downloads between DriveThruRPG and Itch.

Looking only at digital customers...
DTRPG: About 24%
Itch: About 2%

DTRPG has 2x as many overall customers (free and paid), which makes the disparity even more dramatic.
November 2, 2026 at 8:15 PM
They could take 20% and they would be better than either Steam or DTRPG for video games and elfgames respectively

Apparently it is on Lulu, Itch and dtrpg

I mean this. If things get worse... Some of us ditched DTRPG when they showed they were cunts... Could happen that the TTRPG scene moves over to RPG trader exclusively.

Plus, among paid sales, the average that goes into the tip jar is much higher at DTRPG.

No idea what drives this disparity, but perhaps something for creators with PWYW offerings to consider. I'd be curious if anyone sees the inverse.

I wonder if a lot of people on Itch are probably just checking things out, as opposed to DTRPG, whose audience is likely more intentional in terms of actually playing the games.

There's PbtA as Baker and the PbtA community discuss it (PbtA is a design philosophy not a system) and then PbtA as the wider community discuss it (PbtA is what DTRPG calls "the apocalypse engine"), so many arguments about PbtA end up skipping the "what are we actually talking about" phase.

That's great insight

Funnily enough, I am currently working on the 4th video on my series on how I make a living as a TTRPG designer, and the topic is "where does the money come from?"

I don't have much PWYW products, but sales on itch are way higher than on DTRPG overall.
I generally don't suggest that TTRPG creators set their products as pay-what-you-want. Ironsworn is straight-up free, and most of my other offerings are paid.

But PYYW is a good fit for my Lodestar reference product, which is used somewhat as a tip jar. So how do the free vs paid downloads pan out?
November 2, 2026 at 8:28 PM
You should put that on DTRPG if you're able. 😊
October 29, 2026 at 10:24 AM
Just spitballing, but my guess is that people go to itch looking for free stuff, and to DTRPG looking for stuff to pay for.
Plus, on itch it's just two clicks to the downloads, on DTRPG you have to select a price, add to cart, and then go to checkout where it asks for login… much more friction?

It's the six books without the adventures.

Those adventures can be found in Sleeping Gods, The Elven Crystals, and Prince of Darkness.

(Prince of Darkness PDF currently at sale pricing on DTRPG until November)

I agree with not giving bad reviews - I like to review things that I like because I’d rather boost people.

Sadly I can’t review things on DTRPG because as a publisher I’m forbidden for doing reviews by their system 😕

I do reviews of games on my blog though!

I'd love to look into doing physical copies of it, but beyond DTRPG and LULU vanity press options, I'm not sure what makes the most sense from a cost risk perspective.

At the very least I'll do a vanity printing for myself.

Finally got off my butt and published my first D&D adventure on itch and DTRPG. It's compatible with 5E and 5.5E #dungeonsandragons. The next one's already in the works! It's a Filipino-themed adventure based in my decades old homebrew world

The game is being sold now on DTRPG at a reduced price to reflect this, and I will constantly update the book with new art, fixes, editing, and community suggestions, to make sure it’s in perfect shape before its full release.

Review – Lost City of Lydiphon
The Lost City of Lydiphon can be found on DTRPG for PWYW. $4.99 is the default & I think it is justified. (Note: I have an affiliate link above & paid $4.99.)48 pages (A5). Levels 1-2.~ 170…

I'm also doing a "launch sale" pricing on DTRPG even though its a week out of launch. I couldn't do a sale for some reason (maybe because it's a new product?) so it's just a price tweak. $4.99 is the full price, listing it at $4.49 through the weekend.
