TL;DR Apple has patched a serious macOS kernel vulnerability tracked as CVE-2026-39868. An unprivileged app can corrupt kernel memory through the DTrace subsystem. The finder, Vladislav Shevchenko of Positive Technologies, has now published full technical details and a proof-of-concept exploit. Why it matters The bug holds an assigned CVSS score of 9.1, near the top of the scale. It sits in Apple's shared kernel, so iPhone, iPad, and Mac are all in scope.

Once upon a time, OSX even had Dtrace (and ZFS too), but I don't know if Dtrace is still in it or if it got torn out when Oracle bought Sun.

I would assume that OSX has strace... but... it's been getting stupider and stupider since merging with the iPad/iPhone OS

I could sniff the NFS RPC ops...

Po několika zpožděních na poslední chvíli, která posunula vydání 15.1-RELEASE o dva týdny, je FreeBSD 15.1 nyní vydáváno jako nejnovější stabilní verze tohoto operačního systému z rodiny BSD. FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE přináší řadu aktualizovaných uživatelských balíčků. Podpora Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) byla odstraněna, DTrace nyní funguje na 32bitových platformách PowerPC a PowerPC64LE, přibyla podpora změny různých CPU plánovačů při startu systému pomocí volby „kern.sched“, vylepšení ovladače NVMe, podpora novějších akcelerátorů Intel QuickAssist/QAT 402xx, aktualizovaná podpora souborového systému OpenZFS a mnoho dalších změn. Aktualizována byla také řada ovladačů Wi-Fi, které vycházejí ze zdrojového stromu Linuxu 7.0. Přibyla podpora Intel Linear Address Space Separation (LASS) na platformě AMD64, aktualizace manuálových stránek a další vylepšení. Veškeré podrobnosti o změnách oproti loňskému vydání FreeBSD 15.0 najdete v poznámkách k vydání verze 15.1. Bohužel se do FreeBSD 15.1 nedostalo plánované vylepšené instalační prostředí pro desktop KDE, které bylo přesunuto až do FreeBSD 15.2.

I can count on one hand the amount of times I needed to use strace/DTrace to troubleshoot something. lsof is extremely useful for finding lingering open files. tcpdump is also rare for me unless I’m trying to see incoming traffic sources.
