В общем, послезавтра самолет. Давно в моей жизни не было такой спонтанности (ну, мне кажется, по крайней мере)

В голове играет Dagara Project: я делаю шаг, я делаю шаг, не оттолкни меня, прошу

If you're interested in ancestral work, I highly recommend exploring the writings and lectures of Dr. Malidoma Some. He was an author, professor, elder and initiated shaman of the Dagara people in Burkina Faso. He was also queer-inclusive, which I deeply appreciate www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTyu...

Joyeux Lundi! And happy Bastille Day!

It is a stunning winter's morning in Sydney and I'm grateful for the good weather to kickstart the week. We are at the midway point of Winter here in Sydney and well into what the Dharug people of the Eora nation refer to as Dagara.

also anything by Malidoma Patrice Somé (Dagara) ... I've just read "Of Water & Spirit" by him (autobiographical, was incredible.) African Cosmology of the Bântu-Kôngo by Kimbwandènde Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau has also been excellent so far

“Among the Dagara people, gender has very little to do with anatomy. It is purely energetic. In that context, a male who is physically male can vibrate female energy, and vice versa.”

African Medicine Wheel: Dagara (Dagaaba) people, Yoruba people, and Bakongo (Kongo) people

Most people know about medicine wheels in the Americas, but they are also part of Siberian religion, and since people from the Americas came from Siberia, that is to be expected.

my favorite and def one of the coolest instruments ive learned is gyil

i had the greatest opportunity to study gyil for a couple years with Benard woma near the end of his life. when he passed in 2018 we had plans for him to make/get someone to make me a gyil. sadly, i haven't played since

The Gyil (pronounced Jee-lee) is a type of West African xylophone with gourd resonators punctured with holes covered in the silk of spider cocoons.

Perhaps, this instrument holds cultural significance to the Dagara and Lobi peoples.

How beautiful! I just looked this up: "Dagara is the cold season, associated with the arrival of the garad (black cockatoo), which signals the coming of rain. This season typically falls around July-August." Imagine if colonial Australia were this attuned to all the seasonal patterns of Country.

I'm honestly kind of proud of this snippet I wrote up this morning. I ended up leaning on the fat ambassador trope but I'm kind of proud of the twist I gave it. Rather than a sign of pure gluttony or indulgence I made it a sign that this guy was good at his job.

and today, sunday, i helped cook for a grief ritual (after Dagara people’s) in which we had an altar of dirt. it was a good grief ritual.

Yes like you I don’t ascribe to any belief system, I just sort of listen for what resonates and self-identify on very broad terms (i.e. animist, but not any specific type of animist, of that makes sense). I haven’t explored those cultures yet, so far just Dagara (Africa) & a bit from a few NA

In other news, not at all related to anything else I spend a lot of time talking about(/s) this highlighted bit is still one of my favorite bits of character interaction I've ever written.

Drawing from Dagara wisdom, Somé believed that initiation helps reconnect us with soul, spirit, ancestors, nature, and purpose—something he felt was often missing from modern Western life.
