A little bear figurine carved out of amber some 6,000 years ago 🐻❤️

A hole runs through the bear’s torso suggesting it was threaded on a cord, perhaps worn or carried as a protective charm.

Found in a peat bog near Słupsk, Poland, in 1887.

Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes it glow in places. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear’s torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2 It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the museum catalogue ‘’Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished”. In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was ‘Słupcio’,

This little bird survived a volcanic eruption!

Buried by volcanic ash from Vesuvius in AD 79, this Roman fresco of a little bird pecking at fruit re-emerged looking as delightful as it did some 2,000 years ago!

My photo shows detail from a Roman fresco (wall painting) in a corridor at Villa A, the luxurious so-called ‘Villa Poppaea’ at Oplontis (modern day Torre Annunziata) in the Bay of Naples, Italy. The fresco depicts a small light brown standing on a small pinky-brown wooden shelf, against a vibrant red background panel. The bird is shown in profile, facing left, with plummage painted in various shades of light brown and grey to beautifully depict detail of its feathers. The bird is lowering its head with beak open, about to peck into a fig on the shelf in front. There are two further figs painted behind the bird which have already been pecked into. The figs are painted light brown. The figs which have already been pecked into have cream flesh and red seeds.

Roman scent bottles made of gold-band mosaic glass.

Beautiful examples of the skill of ancient glassmakers some 2,000 years ago!

My photo shows two Roman gold-band mosaic glass bottles on display at the Met Museum. Made of translucent cobalt blue, turquoise green, opaque white, and colorless glass encasing gold leaf. Both bottles have globular bodies and cyclindrical necks with horizontal everted rims. The larger bottle on the left measures 10.5cm in height and has a slightly concave bottom. The smaller bottle on the right measures 4.8cm in height and has a flat bottom. According to the museum label: “Gold-band cast glass was a particularly opulent type of early Roman glassware. It combines canes of brightly colored translucent and opaque glass with strips of gold leaf encased between layers of colorless glass. Only a limited number of vessel shapes were made in this way, and some of the most common are small globular or carinated bottles such as these. They were presumably used to store expensive cosmetics and perfumes”.

A collage made up of 10 photos I’ve taken in museums of ancient Egyptian blue hippo figurines. They hippos are made of Egyptian faience with is a ceramic material made of quartz, decorated in black pigment with depictions of Nile river plants, e.g. lotus flowers. These figurines are associated with the life-giving Nile and regeneration. It’s thought they were placed in Middle Kingdom tombs some 4,000 years ago to help with the rebirth of the deceased in the afterlife.

Simply stunning ancient artistry!

Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved whip handle in the shape of a horse.

My photo shows an ivory handle of a small whip or fly whisk carved in the shape of a horse. The horse is seen in profile with head to the left. Its legs are outstretched in a flying gallop, and the back is gracefully arched. The ivory is stained reddish brown, and the mane and tail are black. The eyes are inlaid with garnet, one of which has fallen out (not shown in my photo). Dated to the New Kingdom period, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III, c. 1390–1352 BC. Dimensions: L. 14.7 × H. 5.5 × W. 2 cm

There’s almost nothing cooler than seeing a massive strangler fig in a primary rainforest. Strangler figs can be a number of species of Ficus; they germinate on other trees up in the canopy, then grow downward and eventually root. If the host tree dies, it leaves a hollow scaffolding like this. 🌿
