When your #deafkid starts watching Disney movies but there is very little translated into ASL, you set up a MacMini as media server and download SignUp Media.

If we're talking about education, as a former SAT tutor and the parent of a #deafkid, I'll say this is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad take.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

13 days post-op, Orion carried this high chair back to the stack of other high chairs and then signed strong. 💪🏽 Thanks little buddy for demonstrating you really can do anything. #deafkid

How my wife described yesterday's parent-teacher conference for our #deafkid:

"Our 2nd grader is reading at a 5th grade level, and he's in the 89th percentile for math. Dang, all that ASL exposure is really messing him up."

A million times this. I can speak to my needs, and advocate for my child, but I am not a reliable reporter for my #deafkid.
It's always "I've spoken to parents of Disabled children" and never "I've spoken to Disabled adults" #GE24

If you're the parent of a young #deafkid, I can't recommend Hands Land by @lealaholcomb.bsky.social & co. enough.

It's native #ASL nursery rhymes that you can learn in a few minutes. The rhythm, rhyme and repetition will supercharge your baby's language acquisition. www.amazon.com/Hands-Land/d...

This morning, my #deafkid asked me about the old glass bottle collection I keep in the living room. I explained that I had a job years ago in Massachusetts, working as a carpenter’s assistant. I found the bottles because I was digging a hole for posts for a stairway…

Esphyr Slobodkina 4-EVR. This is a great one to practice your #ASL with, if you've got a #deafkid.
The very one. It’s absolutely my favorite book to read to my kids.

This. In the case of your #deafkid, you might be reading in ASL, in English, or in your home language. But however you do it, do it!
READING ALOUD CHANGES CHILDREN'S LIVES FOREVER! Just 10 minutes a day can be enough to help them find the love of books, and become lifelong readers. So whatever else you do, always find the time to read aloud – and the more you do, the better! #literacy #reading #books

Our challenge is not only to avoid drinking from the sewage firehose, but to nurture complexity. And as you can see from my own contributions to the thread, Bluesky as a format sets limits on that complexity.

I'm gonna go read a book. (And if you have a #deafkid, buy my book--it's not bullshit!)

I often see oralism either described in (rightfully) furious terms by Deaf authors, or treated with kid gloves in an effort to be "fair." But I wanted to capture the feeling I as a hearing parent of a #deafkid get when I encounter LSL in the wild—it's a hoax.

As a grandmother of a #deafkid who receives extra services in the local rural school district, I am very concerned that his access to #ASL resources and one on one help will be affected by any downgrading of the Department of Education. Please speak out for our special needs students. 🙏🏻🤟🏻🫶🏻

Ooooooh, this is a fun book to practice #ASL. 😃 My #Deafie is turning 29-years-old in December. When he was a wee #deafkid & I was starting out on my ASL/SEE journey, Dr. Seuss’s _In a People’s House_ was a fun, go-to book to practice our beginner level ASL. 🤗🦻🏽🧏🏽‍♂️

Inspired by @gettheorion.bsky.social's Deaf artist's posts, I wanted to share "Family Dog" by Susan Dupor. Not a happy painting by any means, but as the parent of a #deafkid, it's never lost its hold over me.

I actually have a slide in my "read to your #deafkid" presentation called Abject Crap, where I urge parents and professionals to just let kids pick their own reading, no matter how trashy or unappealing to adults. It's partly rooted in my own experience as a reader...

I can't believe I haven't mentioned 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore by Jenny Offill & Nancy Carpenter.

It's wet-your-pants funny and holds up on repeated reads. Incidentally, it's not too hard to sign in ASL for your #deafkid, too.
