A classic among physicists! I forget who (maybe deBroglie?) was accused by one of the other early quantum pioneers (maybe Einstein?) of never amounting to much bc he DIDN’T have the ’sitzfleisch’ to actually take ideas past the dreaming stage…

Very interesting vid on YT about politics among leading physicists and how the "pilot wave" theory was proposed by Louis deBroglie in 1927 but shut down by Pauli and others, later to be taken up again by David Bohm in 1952 and later by John Bell.

I do think that sometimes there’s a zeitgeist. Like anyone could have been DeBroglie in 1925 or whatever.
And I’m with you in thinking that if there’s an idea that needs to get out, let’s get it out on the loudest speaker we have.

Well, take the Bohr atom, in terms of deBroglie waves. That's really a sort of "cyclic constraint", right? Having the wave come back in the same phase after one cycle quantizes the angular momentum (and energy). But it's only retrocausal if you can choose the basis in which it ends up quantized.

For example, many other interpretations lack of a good account to extended Wigner's friend arguments (such as the traditional Copenhagen one), or have equivalently wild views on reality (such as some forms of QBism), or lack a good, intuitive, and simple account of QFT (such as deBroglie-Bohm)

To my understanding, we've only ruled out *local* hidden variables. Eg, to my understanding, deBroglie-Bohm ("pilot wave") theories are not ruled out, though are admittedly not much in fashion.
