This is an area where well reported coverage in the NYT and Economist of the bombing campaign has shifted my own opinion against the defensibility of the war. I'm sure others got to the same place for dubious reasons but they're right and Hillary's wrong.
Fire crew on the ranch now doing a defensibility survey because apparently yes they're just going to let it burn into the Bobcat Fire burn scar? People keep telling me to be more optimistic but pessimism is what predicts the behavior of bureaucratic structures.
I'm left feeling like the plan is to just let Valyermo, Largo Vista, Crystalaire, and the rest of the foothills communities in LA county being threatened by the most active area of the fire burn.

Mostly agree with this, except that means of escalation are relevant. You might be in the more defensible position, but people will still take issue if you escalate by firebombing the local Walmart. The manner in which you fight it out is a coefficient of the defensibility of the issue.
The vital currency in all modern political disputes is the public's attention. The more you escalate a conflict, the more attention you get, and if you're in the superior, more defensible position - which may not be the most POPULAR position, at the outset - fighting it out wins people to your side.

i always had a suspicion that greater density = more defensibility in wartime but it's nice to see my priors validated

Expand on the settlements system, add 'base camps' which you can temporarily build anywhere and staff with your companions and other NPCs, and which give you opportunities for recovery and storage but you have to think about where to put them for defensibility etc

It was clear that Tidmarsh wanted to expand the drug’s indications in some form, according to two people familiar with the discussions. Saying no didn’t seem like an option”
