Very similar results of habitat creation & supplementary feeding were demonstrated at other experimental farms not linked to shooting, e.g. RSPB's Hope Farm or Defra/UKCEH's Hillesden experiment, with no gamekeeping or killing of native wildlife. Together, all show habitat is key, not keepering. 2/2

Defra call for evidence on gamebird shooting closes midnight today.

I've sent my response but feel like a student who has not excelled. The examiner seems to have a tenuous grasp of a) the subject & b) how to word a consultation clearly.

But here are my notes: markavery.info/2026/11/01/d...

I recall contacting my MP 5 yrs ago about this when Environment Bill was being debated. I got politely fobbed off with umpteen excuses and a Defra leaflet which basically let the water companies off the hook. And so it goes on…

Less happy observations from Ross Back Sands y’day - Wigeon and 3 Pale-bellied Brents looking like bird flu sufferers. V. worrying given the 10,000’s of birds in the area, and the proximity to Belford where there was a poultry outbreak two weeks ago. Reported to DEFRA #NEbirding

Cheee lovers. The joyous day has arrived. Defra has lifted restrictions on French raw milk cheese at long last.

MONT D’OR IS BACK.

One can have too much of a good thing - since that lovely Tunnicliffe was produced (more or less my lifetime) releases of the non-native omnivorous Pheasant have increased 10-fold. Just 50 million a year now...

Ironically the Defra call for evidence on this subject closed yesterday!

Defra are like any Department, only mainly worse.

It is possible that they are even more full of shit than DWP and NHSE.

Maybe more needs to be done to bring people back after a good time doing real things. Like they have done with Paul Kissack at DEFRA.

The Environment Agency's entire annual budget is around £1bn, and we're the biggest of the Defra organisations. She simply isn't going to save the money she thinks she can. Not to mention that we contribute about £9 for every £1 spent protecting against flood damage.

Badenoch is just such a moron.

(It is absolutely on-brand for DEFRA that although their communication with farmers this year has been beyond terrible, they have managed to get in touch with me to complain about this piece.)
October 28, 2026 at 10:50 AM
UPDATE: DEFRA apologise, saying they sent me a complaint intended for a different journalist.

Heartening to know that the press office functions in exactly the same way as the rest of the department.

and some of Roger's speech can be found here www.theyworkforyou.com/whall/?id=20.... Outcome so far has been no change to the law but Govt/DEFRA has commissioned a research project as reported by RSPCA above. sadly we need more action on this and need to see how this project turns out.

(It is also on-brand that the DEFRA complaint is that the piece says something that it simply does not, in any possible reading, say.)

Follow us if you think it’s insane that native wildlife is killed to “protect” birds bred to be shot, and if you’ve seen wildlife harmed by shooting, tell Defra before 1 November.
