The bacterium 𝘋𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴 was accidentally discovered in the 1950s when scientists bombarded cans of meat with enormous doses of ionizing radiation. It can rebuff radiation exposure up to 1,000 times greater than what would kill a human. www.quantamagazine.org/the-organism...

Ooh, I've been looking for a venue for my Deinococcus plasmids abstract. Maybe I'll end up submitting a poster here.

Deinococcus radiodurans, also known as "Conan the Bacterium" because it's a fucking monster. It's almost unkillable. In his own words "Astronauts fear it. Biologists fear it. It is not human. It lives in isolation. It grows in complete darkness.

Deinococcus radiodurans is a radioactive resistant bacteria that was discovered when scientists tried to sterilize canned food with gamma rays and it still spoiled.

Doing a little assembly and polishing and annotation. Not too bad with 93% completeness with just 12x coverage. I've worked with incredibly hard to lyse cells before, namely deinococcus radiophilus so no harm no foul on the first isolation being difficult. Will culture now.

Here we go... 🧵

1. the question: is the predicted Deinococcus oriC actually functional as replication origin in Deinococcus?

2. your straightforward idea: have a plasmid chimera with one origin that works in E. coli and another one that works in Deinococcus, e.g. Deinococcus oriC.

· 𝘋𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴's capacity to deal with radiation damage is astounding, but it could not have evolved on this planet. there are simply no natural radiation sources of this intensity.
· 𝘋𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 endures extreme, even complete desiccation. such conditions exist on earth, think atacama.
