The Delabole poem calls each slab “a page of buried lore”. Slate does split into sheets, because pressure lined up its flat mineral grains. The quarry opened that rock to the sky. “Cornwall In Verse – Tide To Tor In Poetry”.

Come to think of it that's 1100 dead bats per day every day for 45 years. There would be huge mounds of dead bats on the ground.
And did we even have wind farms in 1981? I know here in UK we didn't until 1991

I'm getting slightly addicted to Facebook accounts extolling the virtues of Cornwall. Having grown up there it's very entertaining seeing a hundred replies going "ooh" about a shithole like Delabole.

Three new floating docks for the Clyde submarine base will be built in Britain in a UK-only competition. Balaena, from Delabole, stands ready: 2,000 people across Falmouth, Padstow, Birkenhead, Tyne and Gibraltar, 12 dry docks, 171 apprentices. Sovereign capability is built in yards like these.

A postcard from the Delabole Slate Quarries, #England c.1911. You can see headframes and slate carriages in the background and two water wheels in the foreground used to power heavy-duty reciprocating pumps to keep the quarries unwatered. #geology #thestoryofslate

A definite slate port!

And there are plenty of vessels where slate was the main cargo (including this one, which is full of Cornish Delabole slate):

Delabole Slate Circle, by Richard Long #TateModern
2 metres in diameter & 168 pieces of slate from the Delabole quarry in Cornwall. Long specified a few rules on how it should be put together. All pieces of stone must touch so that they can be locked together and stable, in a circle.

reputation, according to Boslowick was based purely on Tregarron’s skill for self-publicity and his insatiable desire for attention. Describing him as “…a Delabole wastrel who couldn’t recognise a tune if it kicked him in the balls,” he went on to describe youtu.be/A7iILWUFHm8?...

I went to Delabole in Cornwall in the early 1990s when is had the distinction of hosting the very first commercial windfarm in the UK. There was a even a gift shop and visitor centre, such was the novelty value.

Energy prices will go down, isn't that great news?
I heard it first 33 years ago in 1991 when Delabole wind farm opened, the first commercial wind farm in the UK.

Still waiting.
