Constant demonization depresses the Green vote, thereby reducing preferences available to the ALP to harvest. Some Green vote is a safe protest, but this can also fragment. Also, demonizing Greens policies ultimately shoots the ALP in the foot by making left wing polices seem unpalatable to voters.
