Diet profile is a crucial and broad survival skill, encompassing know-what, know-how, know-when, and know-where knowledge types. Our results therefore bear significance not just for orangutans, but also for other species with similar knowledge requirements. 7/11
The circular dendrogram shows all the recorded unique food items eaten by a sample of 3 focal immatures. Each vertex (grey line) indicates a food item. Each node (colored circle) represents a food species. Node size represents the recorded number of times each food item was consumed by these immatures during the study period. Below the circular dendrogram, each infant's social and individual learning propensities along with the respective population average propensities are shown. The images of the immatures are shown in the middle of the dendrogram.

Preprint: a cross-cultural review of knots.

Using archaeo & anthro data, our study reveals the cultural evolution of knots across 10k years and 83 societies. With mathy methods, we show which knots are most common & how they shaped human innovation.

New feature in SemanticDistance R package -- give it an unordered list of words. It appends a semantic vector to each word, computes cosine distance all word pairs arrayed as square matrix. Converts to Euclidean, finds optimal hclustering solution (k), plots a dendrogram. Does it work? You decide!

I looked at how spells would cluster based on median values of all other fields *except* school then added color labels for school to see how they lined up. Not a lot of correlation between school and other data. Code via carbon.now.sh

✍️ All poetic forms come from somewhere, but figuring out their relationships is hard.

We use sequence alignment on scansion (010.1.0.1) to measure metrical similarity of poems. This allows us to trace metrical 'lineages' and detect descendant forms.

Dendrogram with samples from Catullus. Metronome allows to trace a 'weird' form that uses mollossus and results in 10-syllable line. A 'Renaissance' meter: 10/11 syllable form, popularized by Petrarch, that gave birth to English iambic pentameter. Dendrogram shows three 'directions' of its European diffusion: 1) Italian peninsula and Spain, 2) 'continental' Occitan - French - Catalan, 3) late accentual-syllabic adoption in West Germanic languages Umap projection of metronome alignment of distinct 'modern' 19th century meters (Czech, German, Russian): we are able to trace similar forms across languages, detect iambic/trochaic split, yet preserve some language-specific variation too.
