Good thread. When I started grad school in 2004, quantitative neuroanatomy at the cellular level was often things like Scholl plots, dendrograms, and stereology. Big EM datasets are driving huge advances on this front, in all species. We start to apprehend the structure of the neuropil.

Interesting passage. Buffon starts with a jab at the idea of classification by means of reducing beings to an ideal form. Are we, cell typers, exaggerating in splitting the transcriptomic dendrograms?

Yeah I’ve noticed that happen with some huge vector graphics (like expansive dendrograms). Based on anecdotal experience performance also depends a *lot* on the PDF reader.
