Thousands of unknown viruses have been hiding in cities around the world
Most of what people know about RNA viruses comes from the ones that make them sick, such as the flu, dengue, Zika, and the virus behind COVID-19. By examining everything from subway handrails to city sewage and soil, researchers discovered just how much viral diversity has gone unnoticed. Of nearly 55,000 RNA viruses an international team found in and around 102 cities, most had never been recorded before. Cities, in other words, carry a far wider mix than scientists had cataloged. Why so many went unnoticed Antônio Pedro Camargo, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Chemistry, is one of the study’s authors. He’s also a member of the Biology of Bacteria and Bacteriophages Research Center, which studies bacteria and bacteriophages, the viruses that infect bacteria. “We were familiar with several disease-causing viruses, but we greatly underestimated viral diversity in nature,” Camargo said. “When you search for a virus based on a disease, there’s already a bias because all viruses that don’t cause disease end up being ignored.” “Once we’re able to analyze what’s present in a sample without that bias, we gain a broader view of viral diversity,” he added. The...

Dengue fever in United States: recorded count 105.3% higher
386 reported cases in records dated 14 Sep – 13 Oct 2026, versus 188 in 15 Aug – 13 Sep 2026 (105.3% higher). A wider record window, 16 Jul – 13 Oct 2026, holds 632 reported cases. Reporting coverage varies; this compares recorded counts and does not establish a rise in incidence. Record dates are source-record dates, not illness-onset dates, and a missing report does not mean zero cases.

Dengue virus infection
Dengue is an acute disease caused by infection with any one of four dengue viruses (DENV-1 to DENV-4), all of which belong to the genus Orthoflavivirus. Although conventionally referred to as one DENV with four serotypes, DENV-1 to DENV-4 are genetically different1, with DENV-4 being associated with milder disease and having caused fewer outbreaks than DENV-1, DENV-2 and DENV-3 (ref. 2). All four DENVs are transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which are both widely distributed, and Aedes polynesiensis in the South Pacific. A. aegypti is well adapted to thrive in the urban environment, breeding in man-made water-containing receptacles, such as disused pails and flowerpots1; it is anthropophilic, feeding exclusively on human blood. Consequently, explosive dengue epidemics are mostly associated with A. aegypti-associated DENV transmission. The expected global growth in the number of cities with high human population densities coupled with climate change could thus expand habitats favourable for A. aegypti to thrive3. Indeed, dengue outbreaks are now occurring with increased frequencies in the summer months in southern Europe, the southern USA and northern Argentina1. DENV infection results in a range of outcomes, from asymptomatic infection and self-limiting mild febrile illness that cannot be differentiated...

The reason the helicopter was flying low at dusk was because that's the best time to spray for the mosquitoes that spread dengue, and unless they're flying low, the adulticides they spray won't come in contact with adult mosquitoes and do anything.
