By the way, before I had a densitometer, I compared densities to a Stouffers step wedge, and worked out speed and development times by eye. Not perfect, but it worked. Fine tuning of the speed and time comes from photography, not testing.

of that there were 3 aristo cold lights, one was the VC head, a metrolux timer, about a half dozen Gralab 300s, 500 series also. 2 Thomas duplexes. Kodak process therm, densitometer. a lot of ss lab ware. I had a Gravity Works archival film washer also.

Printing will tell you but a densitometer will speed the process. Minor White’s little yellow book was all about making test prints and determining settings manually.

some more from Jan 1 2015. I was using the Toyo 45CF that day with lenses from 90 to a 300 nikkor M. the densitometer image is from 2014, but other than using it for control strips, I would often measure the density range of the negative as an aim point for paper contrast range. 1.0-1.2 = Grade 2.

And yep, I'm still testing Derek's next densitometer too! The cyanotype kit I ordered just arrived. Excited to compare how 510 behaves with it and how that matches the higher UV curve from the stain.
