They worked on theory of motivation, on deontics etc., which are relevant for ethics, but not on ethics directly.

On a separate note, I just read #FranzKafka's Das Urteil (The Judgement), 1913. An amazing and powerful read, especially if you —like me— like unreliable narrators, reflections on estrangement and on deontics.

Very interesting source on conflicting obligations and suspension of commands. #deontics
NEW: Bishop Rojas of San Bernardino has dispensed his Diocese from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass due to ongoing ICE raids.

A former student asked me about titles on Mīmāṃsā epistemology, philosophy of language and deontics, and also a translation of the Śābarabhāṣya:

Had a great first day at #ICCA2026! Really interesting and useful workshop about deontics w/ Melissa Stevanovic & @drsimonmagnusson.bsky.social

Extra fun for me comes from being back at a North American university campus after so many years. Brings back so many fond memories from my time at UCLA ❤️

My latest post argues against framing ethics in terms of axiology and deontics. Instead: first ask what, in theory, we should want (the telic question); and then how, in practice, to pursue it (the decision-theoretic question). www.goodthoughts.blog/p/axiology-d...

9. soteriology and afterlife: working on the book on the Śaraṇāgatigadya and its fortune through Rāmānuja, Sudarśana, Periyavāccaṉ Piḷḷai, Veṅkaṭanātha
10. epistemology, linguistics: working on the co-edited books on Kumārila
11. deontics 2: planning to translate the whole siddhānta in Maṇḍana's VV

Main projects I am currently working on:
7. rethinking history of philosophy: finishing two books on Veṅkaṭanātha as the real 'inventor' of Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta (incl. a transl. of SM)
8. deontics: finishing the book on Maṇḍana's Discernment about Commands (incl. a transl. of VV chapt 11)

This data has some fascinating orientation to categories, epistemics & deontics, not to mention some L2 learning through interaction.
Gotta press through the last 2 minutes…

Harris’s misadventure in deontics is a cautionary tale:

naive scientism cannot replace rigorous moral philosophy

The empirical nature of 'wellbeing', while valuable in certain contexts, cannot bear the weight of moral obligations

Reducing morality to science is not progress but a setback

I am currently in Cagliari, Sardinia, teaching about Mīmāṃsā and Dharmaśāstra deontics, but also discussing about the historical role of Mīmāṃsā (did Śabara still know about the initial significance of Brāhmaṇa rituals? Did Kātyāyana focus on verbs more than Pāṇini because of Mīmāṃsā ideas?)

Permissions in #Mīmāṃsā #deontics are not as ambiguous as in von Wright 1951 or in common parlance, since they denote only exceptions to previous prohibitions or negative obligations and are always better-not permissions.

i've only skimmed this so far but it looks really interesting. comments on things i've raised in the past regarding EMCA's relation to autism that need addressing. but i saw this endnote (first pic) and would like to use it as a prompt to re-up my own EMCA work on autism (the other three pics).

Deontics.
a second common comment is: the piece critiques XYZ field of study for not engaging in ABC argument, but actually what the piece is doing is obliterating many years of research on this exact thing because somehow you did not find it or engage deeper than the biggest sources in the subfield
