Before #PercyChafer, now 104, stormed Gold beach, #Normandy, he had already served in North Africa with the #DesertRats. He fought to the Rhine, then served in #OperationMarketGarden!

We don’t have the exact date, but this month will mark 80 years since my great uncle posted this #ChristmasCard to his sister, my grandmother, while serving with the #DesertRats in the Netherlands in the last months of #WW2, with its charming depiction of the 7th Armoured Division’s war to date:
The front of a Christmas card depicting a bright red Jerboa insignia, and black lettering reading “Christmas - 7th Armoured Division, 1944” A neat cursive hand has written, in blue fountain pen, “To my dear Betty with best love and special good luck and wishes from your loving brother, Craig” The inside of a Christmas card depicting, in bold primary colours, a jerboa in military uniform, variously: standing to attention on a parade ground (1939), keeping warm round a brazier in the desert, beside a tank (1940-42), smoking a cigarette on the deck of a ship at sea (1943), and skating on a frozen canal, windmills in the background (1944).
