In some parts of Shropshire, it was believed that you must never look behind you after starting out on a journey. This was because the Devil lingered close by, waiting to claim your soul.

On the Shropshire side of Offa's Dyke, it was said that the landmark was a furrow, cut through the landscape on a single night by The Devil. To do this, Owd Scratch used a plough, pulled by a gander and a turkey!

There has been a bit of a slump on the blog currently as I am working hard on my book, in hope I can finish it soon. I've loved the research process so much, so I can't wait to share the Devilish stories with you!

The blog post ”The Devil in Shropshire” by @g0blinegg.bsky.social is a recommended read if you’re at all interested in #folklore, but especially in #devillore. I see multiple parallels to how the Devil is portrayed in Swedish lived religion. nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-...

The Devil Within
Though Power jokes and plays, it’s easy to forget she is still a devil.

In Swedish #folklore, it was dangerous to whistle at night, to walk backwards around a church seven times or to twiddle your thumbs. All of these where ways of calling the Devil! 😈

I suggest you follow @g0blinegg.bsky.social for more interesting folklore.
