Bad phone photo on a rainy, windy autumn PM doesn't do it justice but this patch of Purple Moor-grass fen-meadow @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social is full of Devilsbit Scabious and orchid seedheads. A remarkably good example of a rare plant community but it's only 8 years old, established from local seed.

This narrow belt of Blunt-flowered Rush fen-meadow was established at Flasks Fen @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social in 2018-19. Mowing in autumn has helped prevent dense rush mats forming, and has encouraged spread of Kingcup, Marsh Thistle & Devilsbit Scabious from seed.

The beaked hoverfly Rhingia rostrata - lots of these on devilsbit scabious at Brakeybank Wood, Tudeley. Used to be rare (although always had a stronghold here in the High Weald) but now much more widespread

The mining bee Lasioglossum zonulum - and a pair of flea beetles - at Chiddingstone today. I find L zonulum is the most frequent solitary bee foraging at devilsbit scabious in autumn

Climactic episodes: large open-air meetings (Devilsbit near Nenagh); 1764 Newmarket clash—dragoons kill ≥14. Tumultuous Risings Act introduces collective community fines. Drought (1765) helps ebb the wave.

The finale, on Derby Fen, an absolutely astonishing display of stunning Devilsbit Scabious (Succisa pratensis), blue as the sky. Never seen anything like it. Swathes and swathes of it, some almost a metre tall.
